MOBILE TRANSDUCERS FIX FINISHING PROBLEM

Ultrasonic transducers remove powder coating compounds from turbine blades and vanes

The Pulsatron RT transducer removes powder coating compounds from turbine blades and vanes Turbine engine components coater and repairer Chromalloy UK Ltd averted a cleanliness problem at its Alfreton site in Derbyshire through the purchase of the latest Kerry submersible ultrasonic transducer.

The 1000W, 40kHz Pulsatron RT is used to remove powder coating compounds from turbine blades and vanes post pack-coating and prior to them undergoing vacuum heat treatment. Any fine powder residue remaining on components during heat treatment could cause them irreparable damage and consequently endanger Chromalloy’s relationship with customers that include Rolls Royce and Siemens Westinghouse.

An on-site demonstration of the RT’s ability to remove persistent post-coating contaminants convinced Chromalloy of the new transducer’s worth, but several additional factors were also taken into consideration. Phil Garrett, Coatings Engineer, explained: “The transducer is more efficient and more cost effective than traditional designs, more robust, smaller, and can easily be moved from tank to tank.”

The majority of the parts cleaned are made from nickel superalloys and range in size from 30mm to 900mm.
