Lean manufacturing techniques on the shop floor are often quoted as the solution for UK manufacturers to compete in world markets. Adopting cell and flow manufacturing is easy for machining operations, but a process barrier needs to be overcome to move fully to linked machining and assembly. How does the lean manufacturer clean components, including precision parts, in a short cycle time, in a very small footprint area, achieving very low residual particle contamination and 100% dryness levels, so the parts can be flowed straight to an assembly or packing operation?
Traditional large central washers create massive inventory costs and logistic headaches. Submerged rotating basket systems whilst offering good cleanliness levels have the common problem of slow cycle times requiring multiple batch loading to get the unit cycle time down. Dedicated component washers suffer from a limited life when the component design changes or they require complex re-tooling.
The new Guyson Gyroforce cleaning machine has overcome all these barriers. The radical new Gyroforce washing and drying technique has been proven after several years of research by Guyson engineers developing lean production cell washers for its high volume automotive customers.
Complex components cleaned
The Gyroforce eight-station carousel indexing washer and the unique Guyson spray system give amazing precision cleaning results. Two separate wash stations operate simultaneously, each equipped with fine filtration so a double wash action is achieved in the same cycle time. On applications cleaning car air compressor component machined castings, typically in a 200mm envelope, cleanliness levels below 1 mg/m2 residual contaminants have been proven.
Very low operating costs
The low operating cost benefit of the Gyroforce comes in the drying section by reducing the dependence on expensive air heaters, blowers or compressed air blow off systems. This has been achieved and still the Gyroforce is able to deliver 100% dry components. In the same air compressor application, €5,000 per year energy savings were demonstrated compared to traditional techniques.
Benefits for lean manufacturing
The new Gyroforce delivers very real benefits in washing and drying of components; it achieves this in a very compact footprint and with the need for only one operator, because of its carousel format. This allows one operator to both load and unload the machine from one location and work several machines in a cell simultaneously. Component fixtures can be changed in minutes and new components processed without any other extensive set-up time, thus future proofing the machine from any change in component design and giving a wide parts washing facility.
