Like most maintenance jobs, blade cleaning is much easier if done on a regular basis, before the accumulation becomes too thick or baked on by the heat it generates. Frequent blade cleaning will also improve performance and help extend useable cutting life. But the problem can be exacerbated by the wrong type of cleaning.
Harsh, mechanical cleaning by metal scraper or wire brush can introduce thousands of minute scratches to the blade surface, allowing ever more material to stick to blade and make the situation worse, whilst less abrasive cleaning often involves hard manual labour, scrubbing for prolonged periods with nylon pads and common household cleaners. Or there is the use of more aggressive spray-on caustic solutions that may lead to corrosion of the blade surface. Then of course there is soaking overnight in highly flammable liquids; not ‘best practice’ in this day and age.
Guyson International’s solution is ultrasonic cleaning. Guyson’s industrial quality Pulsatron KS tanks use ultrasonics, controlled heat and a mildly alkaline detergent solution to clean the saw blades safely and effectively. Thirty seconds’ to one minute’s immersion normally suffices to remove resins and saps from a wide variety of saw blades and cutting tools, dramatically reducing maintenance downtime and with the minimum of effort. KS tanks may also be used with a phosphoric acid detergent to remove surface corrosion.
The saw blades or cutting tools are placed into the wire basket and then lowered into the tank and the cleaning undertaken for the required amount of time. Once finished the blades are lifted out, dried, and are ready to use or put back on the rack for next time. No need to ever come to the workshop and find a resin encrusted blade that has to be dealt with before work can commence.
Pulsatron KS tanks allow the user to pre-set exact cleaning times and temperatures, ensuring consistent levels of cleanliness from batch to batch. All functions are controlled by a simple four-button membrane keypad. An LCD panel displays the temperature and time set by the user, the time elapsed since the start of the cleaning process, and the status of the power supply, heater and ultrasonics.
Each unit works within operating temperatures from 20 to 80 degrees Centigrade which can be set in 1-degree increments, allowing the optimum temperature to be selected for a particular combination of component material, cleaning solution and contaminant. Sonics time may be set in the range 0.1 up to 99.9 minutes in 0.1 min increments, or to constant when sonics may be switched on and off manually.
Automatic safety devices include non-operation of sonics if solution temperature is more than 10ºC above set temperature, and low-level protection to prevent heater burn-out if solution level drops.
