Preserving the Past with Modern Precision: Guyson’s Role at Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

Skipton-based finishing equipment manufacturer Guyson International recently installed a reconditioned Euroblast 7PF blast cabinet at Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. The heritage steam railway, which first reopened in 1981, features lovingly restored stations, steam locomotives and carriages, with some parts dating back to the Midland Railway style of the 1800s through to the British Railways style of the 1950s. All this is maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers and staff. Visitors can enjoy leisurely rides along a scenic line from Embsay to Bolton Abbey, right through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

The Euroblast 7PF cabinet has been installed at Embsay’s engineering workshop facilities, where it plays a crucial role in supporting the ongoing restoration work. Restoration is carried out with great care, the blast cabinet using aluminium oxide media, allows components to be meticulously blasted, leaving an etched and keyed surface which is ideally prepared for subsequent hand painting. These components can be all manner of parts from key operational elements such as pistons, through to original luggage rack supports.
Previously, volunteers had to manually sand down components to achieve similar results, a far more time consuming and less enjoyable task.

‘The Guyson Euroblast 7 will greatly speed up and enhance the standard of our steam engine and carriage restoration work’ (Aaron Marsden, Carriage & Wagon Manager, Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway)
All areas of the locomotives and carriages are restored with a microscopic level of detail, with both the exteriors and interiors carefully restored in testament to their original working conditions in their heyday. A notable example is the royal coaches once used by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Thanks to the team’s efforts, visitors can now experience this royal heritage first hand. On some days, it’s even said that the ghost of Queen Victoria herself can be seen aboard!

The Guyson Euroblast range offers a faster, more efficient alternative to traditionally labour-intensive operations such as hand deburring, wire brushing, sanding and grinding. Cabinets are available in both suction and pressure feed configurations, depending on individual production requirements. With an extensive range of standard sizes, there’s a Euroblast system ideally suited to your specific application.
